We envision a district respected by students, families, and community for its high performance and innovation. We envision schools where every student values education and acquires the knowledge, skills, self-confidence, and adaptability to be a capable and successful learner, ready for further education and/or work, and prepared for life’s challenges.
We offer a competitive package of salary and benefits (including health insurance and Colorado PERA retirement) for qualifying employees, plus the chance to work in a positive and supportive organization.
The district is home to two elementary schools (one primary grade center for K-2 and one intermediate grade center for grades 3-6), one junior/senior high school and one alternative education campus.
Students in the district have access to music, art, vocational, band and drama programs. Summer school is also offered. The district has a rich academic tradition, focusing on student achievement, along with an in depth and wide range of curriculum offerings. As well as extracurricular activities such as Knowledge Bowl, Forensics, Drama and athletic teams.
The district has instituted a K-12 intervention and acceleration program to meet the needs of each student. These programs are focused on reading, writing, and math. Data is compiled and aids the professional staff in instructional planning.
East Otero School District is proud of the diversity of the student population. The district is comprised of 71% Hispanic, 25% white and 4% other. The district focuses on meeting the needs of every student.
La Junta Public Schools is in partnership with Otero College and Child Development Services to operate an early childhood center. Together, the partnership offers opportunities for young children to form the social, emotional, intellectual and developmental skills necessary for success in the academic world.
La Junta is located in southeastern Colorado, about 60 miles east of Pueblo. The county seat of Otero County, La Junta has for more than a hundred years formed a junction for commercial, agricultural, and ranching ventures. Before that La Junta was the junction where the Santa Fe Trail branched south to New Mexico, while a lesser route continued west to Pueblo and beyond. The Santa Fe Trail was one of the nation's first great trade routes.
Our town sits on the south bank of the Arkansas River in what is primarily shortgrass prairie country. The mountains for which Colorado is so famous for can be seen to the west, but this is rolling prairie land. Farming dominates the landscape in a narrow corridor along the river, while a short excursion north or south of US Highway 50 brings travelers to miles upon miles of grasslands.
We are home to a regional medical center and specialty clinics, as well as a number of retirement communities. We have an excellent K-12 school system, and Otero College. The college hosts a number of technical certificate programs, a well-regarded nursing program, and a law enforcement academy. The City hosts a number of light industries and an airport in an industrial park north of town, a rail yard, and a downtown business district typical of small western towns.
Our city parks serve as centers for community activity. The fountain in City Park serves as a backdrop to kids fishing and playing; our ball fields are filled with tournaments of all kinds, all summer long. We have roadside farm markets, ties to our railroading past and our history goes back before the fur trade. Our schools excel academically, and support for high school sports rises to the level of fanaticism.
